VIP (vasoactive intestinal peptide) is a linear peptide of 28 amino acids. It is supplied as a lyophilized powder, 10 mg per vial, in packs of 1, 4 or 10 vials.

Identification. PubChem lists vasoactive intestinal octacosapeptide as a synonym of CID 16132300, CAS 40077-57-4. The sequence in one-letter code is HSDAVFTDNYTRLRKQMAVKKYLNSILN.

Background. The peptide was first isolated from porcine intestine in 1970. Its amino acid sequence was published in 1974 (Mutt and Said, European Journal of Biochemistry, 1974). A two-dimensional 1H-NMR study examined its structure in 40% trifluoroethanol. The calculated model has two helical stretches, residues 7 to 15 and 19 to 27, joined by a region without a defined structure (Theriault et al., Biopolymers, 1991).
